Vote splitting
When two similar options compete, their supporters may divide between them. A third option can then win even if most voters would prefer either of the similar options. The ballot cannot tell us whether that happened, because it records only one choice per person.
This can affect how people vote. If you expect your favorite to lose, you may choose a more competitive option to help prevent your least favorite from winning. The totals then reflect those judgments as well as people’s favorites.
Approval voting lets you support several options. Ranked methods let you record your favorite and backup choices in order.
